Small and medium-sized enterprises or SMEs, are considered a prime economic growth engine for most modern economies. At a conference sponsored by the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai, officialsand participants touted the opportunity that China offers SMEs. Under the title of Small Business is Big Business: Seizing Untapped Opportunities in China for US SMEs, the event was held at the Westin Bund Center in Shanghai. It not only attracted US SMEs in Shanghai, but also provided a free live webinar to entrepreneurs around the world.

Hainan Airlines, which launched a new direct flight between Boston and Beijing earlier this year, has partnered with travel consultancy Attract China to provide Chinese-language maps for Chinese tourists going to Boston. "We are excited to announce this partnership with Hainan Airlines," said Evan Saunders, CEO and co-founder of Attract China in an interview with China Daily. Shanghai has been called the "New York of the East". This week, the New York of the East has set up temporary residence at New York's iconic Rockefeller Center. "Amazing Shanghai: A Century of Shanghai and Beyond in Pictures" is a traveling outdoor photo exhibition with four themes that tell the story of Shanghai's development, including key historical moments and achievements since Shanghai opened its port in 1843. The exhibition opened Monday and will be on display through Saturday, Sept 21.

Human capital is the key to success for Chinese companies doing business in the US, a panel discussion suggested. China's General Chamber of Commerce-USA and the China Business Studies Initiative of the University of San Francisco held a panel discussion on the release of a new survey report Chinese Enterprises in US at the University of San Francisco. Representatives of local Chinese enterprises, business schools, law firms and overseas organizations joined in the discussion.

A photo exhibition covering China-US collaboration during World War II in the China Burma India Theater (CBI) was opened in Beijing. The exhibition, named "National Memories," displays pictures mainly taken by the 164th US Signal Photo Company and later on collected by the US National Archives.

Students from the United States and China tested their scientific and research skills on environmental and nature issues in the 2014 finals of the Global Natural History Day (GNHD) competition in Southwest China's Chongqing municipality. 136 teams from nine provinces in China and 74 teams (mainly from the US) had participated in the competition, focusing on adaptability, resiliency and sustainability.

Backed by US funding, an online fashion website in China aims to tap into a younger generation of consumers who shopping online for clothing, accessories and jewelry. Yetang is an online Chinese website specializing in fashion and other products from independent designers. The company has secured funding from IDG Capital Partners, a US venture capital firm that is based in China. Yetang's co-founders, Natasia Guo and Zhang Yan, said IDG found they had a good track record of working with independent designers, which encouraged them to fund their enterprise.

Lu Peiming, newly appointed vice-president and director of human resources at Tongji University, along with two colleagues Huo Jiazhen, dean of the School of Economics and Management of Tongji University, and Yu Xiubao, DBA director, discussed their talent recruitment policy with attendants.
