After a long journey from Washington, US first lady Michelle Obama landed in Beijing on Thursday evening, starting her long-awaited trip to China with a big smile and a wave. Though nobody from the delegation spoke to the media, the first lady's brief debut spread quickly on Chinese media and micro blogs, where users discussed what she would wear and eat, and how she will interact with Chinese first lady Peng Liyuan.

Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Yale University established a joint research center in Shanghai that will focus on so-called translational medicine to benefit human health. Translational medicine (or science) is a rapidly growing discipline in the biomedical and public health fields. It aims to expedite the discovery of new diagnostic tools and treatments by using a multidisciplinary, highly collaborative, "bench-to-bedside" approach. It also deals with personalized medicine — medical solutions based on patient-specific conditions.

Dick Costolo, the chief executive officer of Twitter, arrived at Shanghai Pudong International Airport to start a three-day visit. While on his first trip to China, Costolo will visit local government officials, academics and college students in Shanghai. He will also visit Fudan University on Wednesday, on a visit he has defined as personal. Unlike at Facebook Inc, whose CEO Mark Zuckerberg is a frequent visitor to China and has openly spoken of his desire to enter China, Twitter's senior management has played down the likelihood of seeking a license to do business there.

As Las Vegas ramps up efforts to attract even more Chinese tourists in the next few years, a Las Vegas economic delegation will be visiting several major Chinese cities for a 12-day trip to promote southern Nevada as a global business destination for Chinese investment. The Las Vegas Global Economic Alliance (LVGEA), a non-profit organization heads to China on March 15 to visit Hong Kong, Taipei, Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen and other cities.

ZTE USA CEO Cheng Lixin and a few of his associates came down to Houston from their Dallas headquarters and spent the entire weekend joining thousands of local basketball players and fans for the city's 10th annual Blacktop Battle tournament. The popular two-day event, hosted by the Houston Rockets and presented by ZTE USA, was conducted on the streets surrounding the Toyota Center and had a complete festival atmosphere. It attracted more than 1,000 amateur players to participate in the tournament and thousands of spectators.

Famous Chinese movie star Liu Xiaoqing is coming to tour four major US cities, bringing her latest stage role in the play "A Legend: Sai Jin Hua" to Los Angeles, San Francisco, Houston and New York, from March 29 through April 20, according to Tai Chi, president of Chinese Ticket Box, an entertainment promotion company based in Fremont, California. At a news conference on Tuesday held jointly with Wea Lee, CEO of Southern News Group which co-sponsored this performance in Houston, Tai introduced the popular play which is on tour in China right now.

Governmental officials, members of the Houston Consul Corps and community leaders attended the opening ceremony of US China Partnerships (UCP), a non-profit organization dedicated to creating new ties and strengthening existing ties between Houston and China. The event was hosted by Houston Mayor Annise Parker Wednesday night at Julia Ideson Library and underwritten by Air China.

The Smithsonian National Postal Museum in Washington DC is telling the story of China-US relations through its huge collection of Chinese and US postage stamps and mail. Opening today, the exhibit - Pacific Exchange: China & US Mail - displays collections that are usually in the museum's vault and have never been shown to the public before.

Senior Communist Party of China (CPC) official Liu Yunshan met with a group of prominent U.S. politicians and scholars on Monday. The group, which is led by Brent Scowcroft and Joseph Nye, came to Beijing for the Second China-U.S. Policy Dialogue. Liu, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, reviewed the latest meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Barack Obama, saying it injected momentum into plans to establish a new type of major-country relations between the two countries. Indiana University President Michael McRobbie visited Shanghai, China as one element of IU's international engagement plan. This is the McRobbie's third official visit to China as IU president. During this trip, he aims to "strengthen institutional ties, increase research opportunities and provide greater access to study abroad for IU students."
