Break the Barriers, Inc., the nation's premier sports-arts center uniting the able and disabled, today announced that it has been invited to be a guest of the Chinese Department of Disabled Services, the Department of Religion and the Department of Education. Break the Barriers participated and performed in China's first National Day for the Disabled to be held on May 20, 2007 in Xiamen, and then at other schools, churches and public venues throughout the province, returning to the U.S. on May 28.

Costco Wholesale Corp, known primarily for its US membership-only warehouse clubs, is entering the Chinese mainland without a store. It will sell food and household items to Chinese consumers on TMall, the business-to-consumer portal of Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. The venture announced on 13 October 2014 will be Costco's first foray into China.

Shenzhen's International Micro-Film Festival was launched at United Nations headquarters in New York on 14 October 2014's night, kicking off an event that drew more than 1,500 original micro-film submissions from all over the globe. So-called microfilms are short, low-budget films made by amateur filmmakers that are published and consumed via the country's Internet video portals. The Chinese term for microfilms - weidianying - makes reference to Weibo, the Twitter-like platform where many of these films make their debut.

Media professionals and scholars from China and the United States participated in a two-day conference Oct 5-6 at the National Press Club in Washington to discuss the new type of major country relationship and the role of the media. The meeting was organized by the China Energy Fund Committee as its sixth Sino-US Colloquium first launched four years ago.

In celebration of Confucius Institutes' tenth anniversary, scores of college students from Xiamen University performed traditional Chinese dances and music on a tour of the US east coast. They come as representatives of Hanban, the executive body of the Chinese Language Council International, a non-governmental and non-profit organization affiliated with the Ministry of Education of China. On Oct 3 the student performers took the stage at Ft Meade, Maryland's Meade Senior High School, whose Confucius Classrooms are under the Confucius Institute of the University of Maryland.

Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group Holding Ltd made history with its record-breaking initial public offering (IPO) at the New York Stock Exchange on Sept 19, opening at $92.70, nearly 40 percent higher than its initial price of $68, and passed Facebook Inc in market value on the first day of trading. Alibaba's IPO has opened a new chapter for the Chinese company and has created bigger responsibility for the 15-year-old company, said Jack Ma, co-founder and executive chairman of Alibaba.

On October 15, 10 science professionals focusing on disaster management from Chinese research and policy institutions met with 10 American counterparts at the U.S. Department of State in Washington for the Seventh U.S.-China Young Scientist Forum (YSF). Collaboration in science and technology is an important and dynamic area of the U.S.-China bilateral relationship, dating back to the 1979 U.S.-China Science and Technology Cooperation Agreement, which was one of the first bilateral agreements between the United States and China.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg surprised his audience during a forum at Beijing's Tsinghua University by carrying out the 30-minute interview almost entirely in Mandarin. Zuckerberg generally steered the conversation with some rehearsed discussion, and despite prefacing the interview with an acknowledgment of his less-than-perfect Chinese skills, he managed to rally up several rounds of laughter and applause from the audience.

On July 9-10, 2014, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and Chinese Vice Premier Liu Yandong co-chaired the fifth annual U.S.-China High-Level Consultation on People-to-People Exchange (CPE). The CPE aims to enhance and strengthen ties between the citizens of the United States and China and has done so over the past four years in the areas of culture, education, science and technology, sports, and women’s issues.
