Minnesota and Sister Province Shaanxi celebrated their 30th Anniversary in 2012. Governor Dayton’s delegation traveled to the Province of Shaanxi, home of the famous terra cotta warriors, to meet with Shaanxi Province officials.

Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton was joined by representatives from two biomedical companies, 3M and Medtronic, on the trade mission trip to China. 3M has had a rubber and adhesives branch in China since 1984—3M China Ltd.—which has its headquarters located in Shanghai. Medtronic also has a presence in China, hosting two patient care centers in the cities of Beijing and Wuhan.

In 2010, China purchased $1.35 billion in Minnesota agricultural products, accounting for 27 percent of the state’s total agricultural exports, which include bulk and intermediate agricultural commodities as well as processed food.

Three major Minnesota universities are currently participating in Governor Dayton’s Trade Mission to China. The University of Minnesota, St. Cloud State University, and Metropolitan State University have each seen substantial growth in their relationships with Chinese universities, students, and faculty in recent years, and the current trade mission offers the three universities an occasion to strengthen current ties to China, and to also create new partnerships.

The United States chief of naval operations, Adm. Jonathan W. Greenert, visited China’s aircraft carrier, a symbolic step in the campaign the Pentagon is waging with Beijing for greater transparency even as the two navies become greater rivals. After a brief visit to a Chinese carrier, Admiral Greenert, escorted by Admiral Wu, sailed from Dalian on a Chinese frigate to watch naval exercises.

China and the United States agreed at the Sixth Annual US-China CEO and Former Senior Officials' Dialogue to strengthen cooperation on infrastructure while calling for an acceleration of talks on a bilateral investment treaty. Both sides agreed there are tremendous investment opportunities and huge potential, and urged the governments to conclude the bilateral investment treaty negotiations as soon as possible.
