Virginia Gov. McDonnell, Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker join Chinese governors and other dignitaries at the third U.S.-China Governors Forum in Tianjin. The first Forum was held in 2011 in Salt Lake City, Utah and the second Forum was in Beijing.

Chinese President Xi Jinping met with the U.S. and Chinese governors on April 15, and called for deeper regional cooperation between the two countries. President Xi encouraged U.S. states and Chinese provinces to work more closely in traditional sectors like agriculture and advance cooperation in new areas such as energy conservation, urban planning, and infrastructure. The U.S. governors also met with Ambassador Gary Locke.

Secretary of State John Kerry met with both President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang during his time in Beijing to discuss handling the threat of North Korea, cyber attacks, and climate and energy problems. Additionally, Virginia Governor McDonnell, Iowa Governor Terry Branstad, and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker discussed economic and trade cooperation and environmental management with Chinese leaders.

Chinese and US governors met at the second annual China-US Governors Forum. They discussed Chinese investment in and trade with the United States, as well increased cooperation between US states and Chinese provinces. Trade between the two countries in 2012 was nearly $487 billion.

Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker was in China last week attending a China-U.S. Governors Forum in Beijing and Tianjin before arriving in Shanghai to open a new state office to promote trade and other exchanges. He also met Chinese President Xi Jinping on his trip. Walker expressed confidence that commerce between China and his state would increase quickly in the future, especially in the industries of dairy farming, agriculture and water.

Washington Governor Chris Gregoire, immediate past chair of the National Governors Association (NGA), will lead the 2nd U.S.-China Governors Forum that includes Georgia Governor Nathan Deal, Guam Governor Eddie Calvo, Hawaii Governor Neil Abercrombie, North Carolina Governor Bev Perdue and Northern Mariana Islands Governor Benigno Fitial. The Forum was established to strengthen a subnational dialogue between the two countries and will be co-convened by NGA and the Chinese People’s Associations for Friendship with Foreign Countries.

Gov. Benigno R. Fitial leaves today for Beijing, China to join five other U.S. state and territorial governors for a second U.S.-China governors’ forum on economic development and job creation. The purpose of this forum is to bring the two countries together at the sub-national level. Also it allows for peer-to-peer discussions between U.S. governors and Chinese provincial leaders about topics of mutual interest and to explore opportunities in promoting practical cooperation between the two sides.

Six US state and territory governors and eight Chinese provincial governors convened for the second US-China Governors Forum. This year's forum focused on local economic development and job creation as the main themes of the event. The China-US Governors Forum was established by a US-China Memorandum of Understanding signed during President Hu Jintao's visit to Washington in January 2011.
