Chinese and US delegations reached several agreements to boost trade ties on 09/16/2008. The agreements were signed at the 19th meeting of China-US Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade (JCCT) at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library near Los Angeles. At the one-day JCCT meeting, co-chaired by Vice-Premier Wang Qishan, US Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierrez and Trade Representative Susan Schwab, the two sides agreed to boost cooperation between their working groups in fields such as intellectual property rights and the information industry.

Visiting top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo and US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi reached important consensus in wide-ranging talks on issues such as bilateral relations and inter-parliamentary cooperation on 09/09/2009. Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's top legislature, the National People's Congress (NPC), highlighted the growth of China-US ties since China and the United States forged diplomatic relations 30 years ago, noting the relations were now at a new level. Yale-China has been engaged with health education in China since the early years of the 20th century when we founded medical institutions in Hunan province that remain major centers of medical education and care to this day.

Education was the original mission of the Yale-China Association at its founding in 1901, and that tradition continues to this day through a variety of programs. The most well-known of these programs is the English Teaching Fellowship, through which hundreds of Yale graduates since 1909 have taken on two-year teaching appointments in China. Over the decades, we have continually updated our programs to adapt to changing conditions in China and in the United States, but at its core our work has always remained true to the values of service, learning, and understanding.

Among the many rewarding aspects of Yale-China’s work is the opportunity to facilitate the expression of service by a new generation of American and Chinese young people. Whether it is through an internship that allows a young American to work at a Chinese drug rehabilitation center, a scholarship that permits a Chinese student to finish his education, or a fellowship to a young American lawyer to teach international law to Chinese students.

In March 2006, as part of Yale-China’s American Studies program, the Yale-China Association organized and co-sponsored two workshops in China on the nonprofit sector in the U.S. and China. In Beijing, it partnered with the Institute of Sociology at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences to design a two-day comparative workshop attended by individuals and organizations active in building China’s civil society sector.

The purpose of the project is to build partnerships between school administrators in Oklahoma and China which promote mutual understanding and create opportunities for professional development. The China Education Association for International Exchange (CEAIE) cooperates with OKITEA, and China Exchange Initiative to administer the program.

The Palos Verdes High School wind ensemble performed at Beijing's Forbidden City Concert Hall and Shanghai's Oriental Art Center in China as an American salute to the 2008 Olympics. PV High director of instrumental music Shellie Parkinson, the band and family members took the trip from June 21 to July 1 and visited various parts of the country, including Tian'an men Square and the Great Wall.

The China Institute was established at CSUN in 1982, under the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs. Its membership numbers more than two hundred faculty, staff and members of the community who are committed to enhancing US - China relations.
