The Brooklyn Nets and two Chinese companies are looking to build their brands globally with a recent deal. The National Basketball Association team has announced sponsorship alliances with ANTA, a Chinese athletic-footwear company, and Lava Tech, a digital-products distributor in Beijing. "Our goal is to be a global team, and in order to be global, you need to be relevant in China," said Brett Yormark, CEO of the Brooklyn Nets and Barclays Center. "These partnerships help fulfill that objective."

Beijing and Washington strove to narrow differences by reaching landmark agreements on Wednesday on a flurry of issues that had remained points of tension between them. The agreements, mainly on climate change, military cooperation and trade, underpin the major sectors where the world's two largest economies will improve cooperation, analysts said. The countries pledged to reduce the possibility of military accidents by early notification of major military operations and establishing guidelines of behavior on naval and air military encounters.

A recent visit to China by a delegation from Arizona State University has led to an initiative that will gather research professionals from universities in the United States to identify opportunities for cooperation with their Chinese counterparts. The initiative, named the Global University Alliance, will focus on research and development, technology transfer and commercialization. The one-week visit by the delegation, led by Arizona State University President Michael M. Crow, also produced a memorandum of understanding with Shandong University in Tsingdao.

Deeply influenced by the West Coast’s Light and Space movement, Zheng Chongbin’s practice encompasses biomorphic abstraction, abstract painting that use carbon-based ink and synthetic acrylic, in addition to large-scale light and space installations, and video works. He is a pioneer and leader of the movement known as “contemporary ink.” Zheng’s work embraces both Chinese ink-painting traditions and contemporary art practice, creating a fresh dialogue between the two modes of working through his personal experience of living between Shanghai and the Bay Area.

Starting November 12, 2014, the United States and the People’s Republic of China will reciprocally increase the validity of short-term business and tourist visas and student and exchange visas issued to each other’s citizens. Chinese applicants who qualify for a B-category nonimmigrant visa (NIV) may now be issued multiple-entry visas for up to 10 years for business and tourist travel.

University Professor Michael Waterman, holder of the USC Associates Chair in Natural Sciences, is a 2013 recipient of the People’s Republic of China Friendship Award — the Chinese government’s highest honor for foreigners who have made exceptional contributions to China’s “economic and social progress.” The professor of biological sciences, computer science and mathematics at the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences was presented with the award by Chinese Vice Premier Ma Kai on Sept. 29 during a ceremony held in the Great Hall of the People in Tiananmen Square.
