The U.S. Foreign Policy Colloquium (FPC) was a three-day program designed to help Chinese graduate students and visiting scholars of all disciplines better understand the complex forces that shape American foreign policy. This year's FPC was held from May 28 to May 30, 2014 at The George Washington University, with cooperation from the Sigur Center for Asian Studies at the Elliot School of International Affairs.

From October 27 to November 3, 1997, Chinese President Jiang Zemin visited the United States at the invitation of President Clinton. This was the first visit to the United States by the Chinese head of state in 12 years.

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is a fully-funded overseas language and cultural immersion program for American undergraduate and graduate students. With the goal of broadening the base of Americans studying and mastering critical languages and building relationships between the people of the United States and other countries, CLS provides study opportunities to a diverse range of students from across the United States at every level of language learning.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry has held what the State Department calls an "unprecedented and substantive" dialogue with a senior Chinese official at Kerry's private home in Boston. Kerry hosted China's State Councilor Yang Jiechi for two days of very informal but still candid talks on a wide range of issues. They included Ebola, Islamic State, and Iranian and North Korean nuclear programs.

The USC U.S.-China Institute hosted a discussion with Xiao Lin, the Director of the Shanghai Development Research Center In 2013, the Shanghai government announced the establishment of a "pilot free trade zone" (自由贸易试验区), a 29 square km area. The announced aims for the zone include opening up new sectors for investment and trade, loosening currency controls to facilitate internationalization of the yuan, and advancing China's global competitiveness. Xiao Lin, one of the architects of the zone, discussed the progress made over the first year and prospects for the future. .

The University of California, Santa Cruz, hosted two events centered around the visit of leading independent documentary maker Wu Wenguang and three artists Zhang Mengqi, Li Xinmin, and Zou Xueping. Event: Public screening of Children's Village (2012) followed by a discussion with Wu Wenguang and the Caochangdi artists
