The trip will include stops in Beijing, Baoding and Shijiazhuang in Hebei province, and Tianjin, where a celebration marking the 30th anniversary of the Iowa-Hebei sister-state relationship, and a US-China Governors Forum will take place.

Iowa Governor Terry Branstad renewed his decades-long friendship with President Xi Jinping when they met in Beijing on Monday, for the fifth time. Iowa and Hebei province became sisters in 1983, and in 1985 Xi, then a county-level government head in the province, visited Iowa for agricultural projects and met Branstad for the first time. Xi, who has always stressed Sino-US provincial and city-level exchanges with his rich working experience in local governments in China, told his guests that such cooperation between the two countries has seen "unprecedented good momentum".

Secretary of State John Kerry on Sunday wrapped up a whirlwind visit to China with pledges of a deeper partnership on energy, economic and environmental projects, but no real breakthrough on his top agenda item: North Korea. he situation is just too precarious, analysts said, for China to leverage its huge aid and investments in exchange for, say, a return to multilateral negotiations with the goal of Kim scrapping his nuclear program.

China and the United States will set up a working group on cyber-security as the two sides moved to ease months of tensions and mutual accusations of hacking and Internet theft. Beijing and Washington have traded accusations in recent months of massive cyber intrusions. The United States says hacking attacks emanating from China have targeted U.S. government and corporate computer networks among others, stealing government and commercial data. China claims it is the victim of large-scale cyber attacks from the United States, though it has given few details.

The United States wants China to deliver a "tough" message to North Korea to rein in its nuclear program and belligerent rhetoric, a U.S. official said on Friday as Secretary of State John Kerry flew to Asia. Making his first trip to the region since taking office on February 1, Kerry hopes both to persuade China to use its economic and diplomatic leverage to try to temper North Korea's behavior and to reassure U.S. allies Japan and South Korea.
