For decades, director Iris Stevenson has led her sprawling choral group fromn Crenshaw Senior High School in South Central Los Aneles just about anywhere she could manage. The strategy has paid off - giving generations of kids trips they'd dreamed of and the inspiration to make steps forward in all aspects of their life. But with a program as large as this one (currently around 800 members, but topping off at one point around 1,200), there can be precious little time left for fundraising.

Soy sauce surely has an abundance of culinary applications, but painting with it is certainly not one of the condiment's primary uses. Nonetheless, one Chinese painter said people would be surprised at soy sauce's potential use value in artistic applications. "I don't know how many people use soy sauce for painting, but I don't think it's something a teacher would teach you at school," said Zhang Hongtu, a New York-based painter and installation artist.

To mark the 1st anniversary of launching its Facebook page, the Chinese Consulate in San Francisco and Facebook Inc co-hosted an open-house event Saturday night at the consulate. The consul general, deputy consul generals, section chiefs, representatives from Facebook, dedicated fans of the Facebook page and diplomats from other countries attended the event. Yuan Nansheng, Chinese consul general in San Francisco, encouraged everyone to stay tuned in to consulate's Facebook page.

After years of preparation, Duke Kunshan University (DKU), a Sino-American college founded by Duke University in the US and Wuhan University in China, welcomed its inaugural class of students in Kunshan, Jiangsu province. More than 60 students attended a ceremony to mark the occasion wearing a DKU T-shirt that was designed by the university. The university is located on the west wing of Kunshan, an emerging city in east China's Jiangsu province. It received accreditation from China's Ministry of Education in 2013 and is now governed by an independent board of trustees.

Twenty-six young artists from the US and China showcased their original artwork on the importance of protecting the planet as part of an exhibit held at the United Nations in New York. The exhibition, named Live Green Art, was organized by Helpyoulearn LLC and the Sino-American Cultural Council. It focused on the UN mission of "Environmental Sustainable Development". UN staff and representatives from member countries attended the exhibit's opening ceremony.

Capital Region USA, an organization that promotes Washington DC, Virginia and Maryland as travel destinations, recently held a tourism promotion conference in Beijing, Hangzhou and Shanghai. According to the United States Department of Commerce, 1.806 million tourists from the Chinese mainland came to the US last year, reflecting a year-on-year increase of 23 percent. Six Palo Alto, California, parents spoke to the Board of Education during a public comment session to urge the board to expand a Mandarin immersion program to the middle school level. Chinese immersion education is a method of teaching the Chinese language in which the Chinese is the language of classroom instruction. Through this method, learners study school subjects, such as math, science, and social studies in Chinese. Currently, there are several elementary schools in Palo Alto providing Mandarin immersion programs and two high schools offering Mandarin classes.

Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) has deployed a new IBM mainframe computer system, the two companies said on Tuesday, boosting the U.S. technology giant's credentials in the country. IBM's joint announcement with ICBC, the world's largest bank by market capitalisation, shows IBM is still doing business with China's state-owned banks despite widely circulated media reports in May that suggested China's central government had ordered banks to remove IBM equipment because of cybersecurity concerns. A former scientist at a U.S. government-owned nuclear weapons research facility in New Mexico pleaded guilty in federal court to illegally taking a lab-owned computer to China and lying about it, a U.S. prosecutor said. Jianyu Huang, 46, a naturalized U.S. citizen from China who lives in Albuquerque, pleaded guilty to interstate transportation of a government-owned computer and computer-related media, the U.S. Attorney for New Mexico said in a statement.

U.S. and Chinese military officials will hold talks on rules of behavior at the Pentagon days after the United States denounced a "dangerous" Chinese jet intercept of a U.S. Navy patrol plane. Last Tuesday, a Chinese fighter pilot flew acrobatic maneuvers around the U.S. Navy's P-8 Poseidon anti-submarine and reconnaissance plane, crossing over and under it in international airspace over the South China Sea, the Pentagon said. The 24 U.S. air crew members were held for 11 days until Washington apologized for the incident.
