Chinese film producer Beijing Galloping Horse Film & TV Production Company has joined forces with India's Reliance MediaWorks to buy US-based Digital Domain Media Group, according to a source in the Chinese company, Beijing Business Today reported. Previous reports said the two companies acquired Digital Domain for $30.2 million. Reuters reported that the Chinese business holds a controlling 70 percent stake in the US business, with Reliance MediaWorks holding the remaining 30 percent.

China's leading private conglomerate Dalian Wanda Group Co. completed a high-profile acquisition of AMC Entertainment Holdings, Inc., valued at roughly 2.6 billion US dollars, in Los Angeles, California. With the completion of the deal between Wanda and AMC, the second largest cinema owner in the United States, Wanda will be added with 338 multiplex theaters and 4,865 screen, including 2, 171 3-D screens and 124 IMAX screens to its assets, becoming the world's largest cinema owner.

Chongqing Normal University of China and the China-US Center at the United States' Rice University have agreed to strengthen their academic cooperation over the next five years. The two sides signed a memorandum of understanding to establish an alliance covering research, teaching and training educational personnel. The memorandum was signed by Chongqing Normal University president Zhou Zeyang, Office of Sponsored Research director Melinda Cotten and China-US Center director Mason B. Tomson.

Dignitaries gathered in New York for a conference to promote the China Import and Export Fair (also known as the Canton Fair), the 112th session of which will take place in October in Guangzhou. The Canton Fair itself draws 200,000 buyers from around the world. "It's a one-stop shop - you don't have to travel to all of the countries to meet these buyers," Matthews said. Dubbed "China's No 1 Fair", the state-sponsored exhibition began in 1957.

Carlyle Group LP, one of the world's largest private equity firms, said that it purchased a 13.5 percent stake in Meinian Onehealth Healthcare Co Ltd. The move underlines Carlyle's confidence in the development of preventive healthcare checkup services in China and the role private medical agencies play. The investment capital comes from Carlyle's yuan-denominated fund totaling 5 billion yuan ($789.24 million), which was established in 2010 with Beijing's municipal government, but the detailed amount was not provided.

Andrew Campbell, a graduate student from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, in the United States, has come to the Chinese capital to investigate how a city benefits from providing a bicycle rental service to residents and visitors. As one of 40 US graduate students in the 2012 Sino-US Young Professionals in Science and Engineering Exchange Program, Campbell will spend two months conducting his study at Tsinghua University in Beijing.

Before the Asian American International Film Festival screened its first feature in 1978 in what is now New York's Chinatown, US audiences had no dedicated showcase for independent Asian or Asian-American cinema. The closest one could get was the occasional martial-arts film at the local movie house. The 35th edition of the annual festival is a 12-day affair that opened Wednesday and runs through August 5.
