In the 1990s, the main focus of the Center’s work was the Yunnan Nationalities Cultures Project. The project was designed to assist the cultural leaders of Yunnan Province in creating a comprehensive strategy for the continuation and further development of the traditional arts of Yunnan’s 25 minority nationalities.

In June of 1986, the renowned tenor Luciano Pavarotti traveled to China with the Genoa Opera. As guests of the Central Opera Theatre and the Ministry of Culture, the Company performed La Boheme and gave several recitals of 19th century Italian songs. Not surprisingly, the superstar of the opera world commanded tremendous attention and adulation wherever he went in Beijing.
January 1, 1979
In 1979, as China re-opened its doors to the West, virtuoso violinist Isaac Stern received an unprecedented invitation to tour the country. The Center played a central role in facilitating this visit with the Chinese government and planning Stern’s itinerary. While in China, Stern performed concerts and taught master classes in Beijing, Shanghai, and Xian.

On a goodwill tour meant to emphasize the value of education abroad, First Lady Michelle Obama spoke to over 100 American and Chinese students, including nine participants of the American Councils’ administered National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) program, at the Stanford Center at Peking University on Saturday, March 22, 2014.

The Yale Chinese Spring Festival Gala for 2014 has been held successfully in Woolsey Hall on February 8th, organized by Association of Chinese Students and Scholars at Yale (ACSSY). Chinese communities of Yale and New Haven, as well as international students and scholars, came to the Gala to celebrate the most important traditional Chinese festival.

University of Kentucky’s volleyball team traveled to China for 14 days to participate in education, cultural exchange, and the CCLSKI Cup International Women’s Volleyball tournament. The team learned about Chinese culture while attending classes and training at Shanghai University.

Fifteen UK faculty taught at Shanghai University (SHU) in China for a week this summer through the UK Confucius Institute’s (UKCI) “UK Faculty China Short-Term Teaching Program,” during the week of June 16-20.

The US Navy on Sunday welcomed four members of China’s military aboard one of its aircraft carriers — and said it hoped to receive a return invite someday. The four People’s Liberation Army members were among guests flown by a C-2 Greyhound aircraft to the USS George Washington for a “VIP visit” before it berths Monday off Hong Kong on a routine call.

A team of experts led by the Paulson Institute, CCIEE and CAM has developed the Paulson City Assessment Tool (PCAT) as a guideline for mayors and policymakers in China to identify areas for immediate action and to support the implementation of best international practices in urban sustainability.
