U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates visited China for four days. He met President and Central Military Commission Chair Hu Jintao, Vice President Xi Jinping, Gen. Xu Caihou, vice chairman of the Central Military Committee, National Defense Minister Gen. Liang Guanglie, and Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi.
Outcomes:
Gates said that the Chinese were taking an American proposal to hold a strategic dialogue seriously. During the visit, however, the Chinese tested their new J-20 stealth fighter. According to Gates, China's civilian leaders were not aware of the jet's first test.
