Monterey Park student exchange program gives foreign students a glimpse of America

Monterey Park’s summer student exchange program is giving students from around the world a chance to learn about the American education system. The 10 day summer program began in August 1 and includes tours of East Los Angeles College, UCLA and attractions such as the Walk of Fame, Getty Museum and Disneyland. Angela Ma is a 16-year-old student from Kunming, China visiting the United States for the first time in her life. “I want to get to know the differences between the Chinese education system and the American one,” Ma said. “I am considering coming to the U.S. for college.” Ma is one of 16 students from China, Japan, Korea and Mexico coming to the United States with Monterey Park’s program. Since its inception five years ago, the program has been subsidized by the city and the Sister Cities Commission of Monterey Park. During their stay, the students will remain with their host families in Monterey Park.
