Amb. Dobrlansky leads AFPC delegation to China
AFPC sponsored a delegation to China led by former Under Secretary of State Paula Dobriansky (2001-2009). This trip marked the latest installment of an exchange program with the PRC that began in 1994. The delegation also included AFPC President Herman Pirchner, Jr.; Robert Reilly, former Director of the Voice of America; AFPC Kraemer Strategy Fellow Jeff M. Smith; AFPC Senior Fellow for China Studies Joshua Eisenman; longtime AFPC friend Michael Gleba; and Research Consultant Julie Burke.
AFPC delegates met with top officials including Minister Zhang Zhijun,China’s Minister of Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council PRC; Liu Jieyi, Vice Minister of the International Department of the Central Committee; as well as top think tanks linked to China’s national security establishment.
Outcomes:
The delegation’s meetings covered a wide range of geopolitical issues, including: U.S.-China relations, the leadership transition in China, the current crisis on the Korean Peninsula, China’s territorial disputes with several of its neighbors over islands in the South and East China Seas, and China-Taiwan relations.
Additionally, the delegations discussed Washington’s and Beijing’s different interpretations of freedom of the seas - differences that could lead to serious problems between our two nations.
The group also traveled to Shangdong Province (population 96 million) where meeting were held with top provincial leaders. A ride on China’s increasingly numerous bullet trains and tours of various industrial enterprises reminded us of the reasons for China’s rapid economic growth.
Perhaps the highlight of the delegation’s visit to Shangdong was a visit to the birthplace and family home of Confucius.
On the train trip back to Beijing, the group met a 75th-generation descendant of Confucius who explained to us that the many thousands of his living relatives are in touch and periodically return to the old home.
AFPC expects to receive a Chinese delegation later this year.
