Admiral Mike Mullen, chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, visited China, following up on a visit General Chen Bingde, chief of the PLA's general staff, made in May 2011. Discussions covered disputes in the South China Sea, arms sales to Taiwan, and China's military modernization and cooperative efforts.
The two sides announced plans for joint exercises and exchanges, including those involving hospital ships, medical, and rescue activities.
