The University of Notre Dame will participate in two programs this summer to strengthen cooperation and support the growth of athletics in the Chinese higher education. Assistant Provost for Internationalization, John Noble, will speak in Beijing on June 7 at a signing ceremony between Notre Dame and the Federation of University Sports China. On July 5, Notre Dame will welcome a delegation of over 40 Chinese athletic administrators for a month-long study of Notre Dame athletics and university administration.

The U.S. and China held an expert meeting to discuss international norms of state behavior in cyberspace and other security issues as part of the first meeting of the Senior Experts Group on International Norms and Related Issues. The two sides had positive and constructive discussions on related issues and agreed to have a second meeting within six months.

Vice Minister Liu Zhenmin met with the US media delegation to discuss the historical course of the South China Sea issue. During the meeting, the topics discussed included the background of the South China arbitration case initiated by the Phillipines, the US "Freedom of Navigation" program in the South China Sea, and the influence of the South China Sea issue on US-China relations.

An agreement signed in Shenzhen, China launched a partnership among the University of California, Berkeley, Tsinghua University and the city of Shenzhen promoting research colloboration and graduate student education. The agreement establishes the Tsinghua-UC Berkeley Shenzhen Institute which will recruit top researchers globally and serve as a platform for innovative research by graduate students.

The U.S. and China held the inaugural Civil Space Dialogue in Beijing, China in which the two sides exchanged information on respective space policies. The Civil Space Dialogue is a part of the Strategic Track of the U.S.-China Strategic and Economic Dialogue whose mission purpose is the shared goal of advancing civil space cooperation among the two countries.

Amid growing security tensions between the U.S. and China, a week-long exercise is being held for U.S. soldiers and soldiers from China's People Liberation Army at the Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington State. It will be the first time that ground-level Chinese soldiers visit an Army Base in the continental U.S. for a military-to-military exercise.

At the FIVB World Grand Prix held in Ningbo, the Chinese women's national volleyball team beat the U.S. women's team in a 3-1 victory. Zhu Ting led the Chinese team with 17 points and helped to keep their team's 3-0 record in FIVB World Grand Prix's Preliminary Pool A. The FIVB World Grand Prix is the most important competition before the Olympics, with China currently ranked No. 2 in the world behind the U.S.

The Chinese and U.S. military signed the China-US Army Dialogue Mechanism at the National Defense University in Washington, D.C. Major General Tang Ning and Major General William Hix signed the dialogue mechanism under the witness of Chinese CMC Vice-Chairman Fan Changlong and US Army Chief of Staff Raymond Odierno.

The 2016 U.S.-China Coordination Meeting on Disability was held on April 9-16 in Beijing, in which the U.S. Delegation was led by Special Advisor for International Disability Rights Judy Heumann. The meeting brought together experts from the U.S. and China to discuss the rights of persons with disabilities.

As part of the 8th U.S.-China Strategic and Economic Dialogue, the U.S.-China Joint Session on Climate Change was held as an opportunity to discuss key areas of cooperation and strengthen joint efforts on climate change. The dialogue was chaired by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew, Chinese State Councilor Yang Jiechi, and Chinese Vice Premier Wang Yang.
