They discussed with local officials and scholars issues of US-China relations and the development of Shanghai's economy. The delegation also visited Beijing and Shanxi Province.

Antonio Villaraigosa, Los Angeles mayor, and Xi Jinping met in late May to discuss US-China relations. Discussions during the trip included expanding daily flights from China to Los Angeles and adding direct flights from second-tier Chinese cities (i.e. Chongqing & Chengdu). Xi referred to Los Angeles as the "epicenter" of the U.S.-China relationship.

Mayor Villaraigosa visited China in 2011 to promote friendship, trade, tourism and future investments. At a press conference, Villaraigosa mentioned that Los Angeles has the largest Chinese American population. Since 2006, the number of Chinese tourists visiting Los Angeles has increased by 78 percent. In 2011, the number of tourists from PRC increased by 40 percent. Mayor Villaraigosa hoped to turn Los Angeles into a global commercial hub in the Pacific Rim.

Under the agreement, California and Jiangsu agreed to partner on renewable energy, bio medicine, and information technology; hold a "Jiangsu Week" later this year to promote tourism, business, and culture in Jiangsu; and support training programs for Jiangsu civil servants at California universities.

At an investment workshop at Foster City, Mayor Sun of Penglai, Shangdong described the business environment in Penglai and discussed possible areas of cooperation between Penglai and California. Penglai, Shangdong and Foster City, California have a lot in common: coastal cities with beautiful environment and good places to do business. Mayor Sun called California the "center of technology innovation."

Negotiations over San Francisco's biggest redevelopment projects are expected to be an essential part of Ed Lee's first visit to China as a mayor. Lee negotiated with officials from the China Development Bank. Lee flew to Hong Kong before traveling to Beijing to speak to students at Tsinghua University and meet with government officials. Lee will court Chinese investment in technology and biotechnological companies.

Yuba City officials travel to China in an effort to connect California's agriculture industry to the Chinese market. Yuba City mayor John Buckland believes it is extremely important to lay groundwork for future relations. Although the trip cost the city about $15,000 to send three representatives to China, city officials believe this trip be a "golden opportunity".
